After staying in Ennis Sunday night, we drove about 20 miles to Bunratty Castle Monday morning. The present structure was built around 1425. At around 1500 the castle came in to the hands of the O’Briens, the most powerful clan in Munster and later Earls of Thomond. Some of the restoration was done in the 1960’s.

King John’s Castle
It is a 13th-century castle located on King’s Island in Limerick, Ireland, next to the River Shannon.[1] Although the site dates back to 922 when the Vikings lived on the Island, the castle itself was built on the orders of King John in 1200. One of the best preserved Norman castles in Europe, the walls, towers and fortifications remain today
