Day 3, Monday

After staying in Ennis Sunday night, we drove about 20 miles to Bunratty Castle Monday morning. The present structure was built around 1425. At around 1500 the castle came in to the hands of the O’Briens, the most powerful clan in Munster and later Earls of Thomond. Some of the restoration was done in the 1960’s.

We entered by going up the wooden steps

the great hall, first thing we notice is the Nebraska sweatshirts
They are looking down at me in the hall
These steps were not so bad
The steps are called stumble steps and go in a clock wise direction. They are uneven in size and height. giving the occupants of the castle an edge when invaded
I did go down some of the steps. It was the only way out.

King John’s Castle

It is a 13th-century castle located on King’s Island in LimerickIreland, next to the River Shannon.[1] Although the site dates back to 922 when the Vikings lived on the Island, the castle itself was built on the orders of King John in 1200. One of the best preserved Norman castles in Europe, the walls, towers and fortifications remain today

Christy and Morgan climbed to the top.

Balleyseede Castle

This is the castle we stayed in Monday night. It was occupied by the Blennerhassett family until 1996.
