Day 6 Thursday

After staying in Kilkenny Wednesday night, we walked the 3 blocks to Kilkenny Castle. The first castle was built in 1195 and in the 18th century, the present castle had become rundown. . In the 19th century, the Butler family attempted to restore it to its original medieval appearance, and added to it in 1854. The 20th century saw a large amount of restoration and maintenance. Excavations and building surveys in the 1990’s revealed traces of an earlier castle, exposed a postern gate and section of the castle ditch, and partly uncovered the lost southeast side of the castle.
